The Rich History of Detweiler Park

The history of Detweiler Park is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Detweiler and Stackpole families. The land was originally purchased eight decades ago by General Edward J. Stackpole Jr., a prominent local figure who co-founded Stackpole Books and served as the president of the Telegraph Press. “The General” (as he was fondly dubbed by his family and friends) planted all the pines behind the main house and along the trails and provided a home in the 1950s for the Dauphin County Anglers and Conservationists on family property along Clarks Creek. In the same spirit, the family later donated land for the Dauphin County Conservation District offices.

In 1943, his daughter, Mary Frances “Frankie” Stackpole, married Meade D. Detweiler III, and together they expanded the estate, enhancing the land’s natural beauty with conservation efforts. A 1993 letter from Meade’s files states simply his vision for the future of this land: “The property should be an area where habitats are preserved and managed in perpetuity for wildlife based on sound ecological principles that demonstrate a strong land ethic…” Meade, an avid conservationist, worked tirelessly to improve tree health, attract wildlife, and maintain the walking trails that visitors enjoy today. The family’s vision was for the land to be enjoyed by the public, leading to its donation to Dauphin County Parks and Recreation in 2016. Detweiler Park stands as a testament to their dedication to preserving natural habitats and providing public access to this unique landscape.
